It never ceases to amaze me how much time and energy my children take. I love them to bits and know this time doesn’t last forever so most days I am okay with the vortex that comes along with raising children. It does make it challenging to maintain a regular yoga practice though. The ONLY moment I could find to do yoga today was while I was at a paintball course waiting for five teen boys to finish shooting each other. Thankfully we live in a beautiful area with lots of woods so my yoga practice was under the trees in nature….with rat tat tat sounds in the background, and all kinds of yelling “he’s over here! shoot shoot shoot!!!!, GET HIM,” Yup. It is a colourful life. The yoga was nice though… I love doing yoga in nature even if the background sounds were a little distracting. The boys had fun and my back feels much better thanks to the time spent stretching. Ahhhh yes, the life of a householder yogi.
Whew.. life really got away with me there for a bit. Christmas, wedding anniversary and then New Years ate up any spare time I had to write on here. I did get in at least SOME yoga over the holidays. I would say I averaged every second day. I am back on track now though. Both with yoga and “hopefully” blogging.
I used up my five class pass at the Victoria Iyengar Centre and activated a month long pass to Bikram Hot Yoga. Yes you heard me right.. I have a confession. I LOVE Bikram’s Yoga. I don’t much like Bikram or his teaching style and I always feel a little guilty putting money into his pocket. Despite this I do really like the 26 postures they do in those classes. I also LOVE being in the heat. Unlike many people I have talked to who have done Bikram’s I feel pretty comfortable in a hot studio. I don’t find the postures are particularly difficult either so it is a nice yoga session where I finally feel WARM enough. Winters around here really do get to me.
So ya.. Bikram’s… It is a nice blend with my own teachings and my personal practice at home right now. I suspect I will go for the one month and then return to the Iyengar Centre but hey.. it gets me in a hot room for January. That is a good thing.
I helped organize an event this weekend which left me with very little spare time. I had a lot of things to get done once the baby went down for the night so I decided that I would just have to do yoga with her awake. That was fun. No really it was (minus all the bruises).
She loves the yoga mat. She loves folding it and hiding under it. And she has this game she plays were she runs through our legs. So when I did Warrior 1 she ran under my legs, when I did wide legged forward fold.. she ran under my legs. I thought perhaps some ground work would go better rather than standing poses. I did rabbit.. she found her rattle and started banging on my back with it, as if I were a drum. Perhaps the best move of the night though was shoulder stand. She decided to feed my eye sockets craisins while I was in shoulder stand. I am sure you can guess how well Savasana went…
I laughed a lot. It was funny doing yoga with her and watching where her imagination went with it. I guess it was yoga, sort of.. I think I will do more rolling around on the mat with her. I also think I will go back to doing yoga when she is sleeping.
